Wow. This place was a class act. It was refreshing to see a locally owned restaurant with great beer and wine that wasn't part of a hotel on the beach, a chain restaurant or an expensive establishment. I was immediately welcomed and greeted with a smile, even with a busy dining area. The bartenders were very friendly and encouraged me to try both their sparking rose "split" which was a mini bottle holding two servings for only $11. It was delicious. I also tried one of their "wine-tails" (how often do you see this?!!) and the "Southern Cali" was a hit. It had a hint of jalapeño and wasn't too sweet... perfection! I love beer ,which they had a good selection of, but it was fun to drink quality wine in an unpretentious environment. The food was tasty and well prepared. I ordered the jalapeño cornbread with bacon jam and the kale salad with crab cake added. The crab cake was buttery without too much filler, and the cornbread was moist and insanely tasty with the bacon jam (they should sell this in stores). A delicious place and I hope to find a way to return!

It's hard not to like gastropubs with tons of craft brews and only local beers on tap (most I hadn't even heard of, which I view as a good thing). The patio is large, just right off the beach, and lots of space on the inside too. Menu for food was not huge, but wasn't too hard of a sell to get the wife to come here. The crab cakes were great, with mostly crab and little bread, and an amazing spicy avocado sauce. The grilled potatoes are kind of boring but healthy, mashed were better. The burger with the bacon and avocado was excellent. Cooked perfectly and lots of flavor throughout. We also had the skewer app with the steak (cooked well and a good sauce) and siracha shrimp (decent but kind of boring) and jalapeño cornbread. The latter was flavorful but way too dry. However, this was remedied by the bacon jam and honey butter, both of which were great. They have a happy hour m-f til 7 I believe and it's a great deal on most of what I listed above, some other options, and with the beers on tap in particular. They also have tons and tons of beers on tap. Good spot among expensive touristy restaurants.

This place has a very good burger. I had the galaxy burger with some fries. The burger had bacon jam on it which made it something special. The weird thing about the place is that they don't let you go any lower than a medium burger. Personally I think medium rare is where a burger should be at, so I was like...wtf? Overall good burger/drinks and atmosphere, but it's a place I would go to once in awhile if I happen to be walking on that block

Went there on a Friday night, the outside was packed so we ate inside. It has a good selection of craft beers and drinks. The crab soup was very good and so were the burgers. I wish they would of gave more fries with the burger. Definitely a good place to go if you want a burger and beer.

The food was extremely tasty. The triple dip and chips had salsa, guac, and Gouda cheese dips. They were to die for. I ordered the Galaxy burger as a main dish. It was out of this world to say the least. I highly recommend stopping by this establishment if you like progressive, wholesome food eating environments.

My wife and I ate dinner here last night, and it was a delightful experience. We shared the two named burgers currently on the menu - "The Republic" and "The Extra Smokey"; both were truly excellent - cooked perfectly, great taste, very nice presentation. We both preferred "The Republic" due mainly to its amazingly delicious bacon jam, but both were very good! We also tried the jalapeño cornbread (which also comes with BACON JAM!) and it was amazingly good. I also sampled a variety of the local beers they have on-tap (and one bottled), based on recommendations from Joe, the owner - they have a well-chosen variety of craft-beers available (my favorite was a mixture recommended by Joe - 1/2 glass of St. George Larry's Lemonade mixed with 1/2 glass of some other beer (the bartender will know which one) - refreshing!). The space itself is well-decorated, open, clean, and comfortable. The bathrooms were also very clean. The employees that we spoke to were also very friendly, helpful, and courteous. The Mrs. and I plan to make Home Republic a regular haunt - see you there!

Last summer thought this place was...meh! Seems things have changed. Though it still isn't a place i'd drive across town for necessarily, it has slowly grown on us as our top place to go for happy hour on the boardwalk. Bar, table seating, or even a couch area to chill out with your brew. No hard stuff unfortunately, but great microbrews/IPA's, wines, etc. Small menu, the way it should be. In my view, the food should compliment the brew, but shouldn't keep you scanning through a book to choose. Allows the chef to concentrate efforts better. And I've tried most of the menu - it's all been great. Not a fan of the bacon jam - different, not bad, glad they offer it, but fell flat to me. As much as I appreciate the effort, bacon is best in its native form only. Lol, my wife and everyone else loves it. Also appreciate the effort they put into great tasting food. Prices no different then BWW or Murphys or other similar places around here. The one other thing they do good here - the entertainment. Typically a one or two person set-up with guitar. Keeps the mood relaxed, perfect if your with friends at the bar or on a date just the two of you. Hope they keep doing this. My rec - try the Galaxy brew and the steak/shrimp skewer.

Fantastic beers, great food - need I say more? They brew their own beers, but also serve good food. Crab cakes were yummy!

  • Scott B.

Not a fan at all! Maybe because it's off season, but no excuse for serving cold beer and out of the first two beers I ordered. But was near the hotel, but get it together. Beer and wine bar, good if you like limited options... Big negative is I don't like having a cocktail at the bar and looking at the cooks pants around his lower butt. If your in a kitchen cooking be respectful.

I had seen some reviews on yelp about Home Republic so I decided to give it a try. My daughter and I went during happy hour so we saved a few dollars on our meals. She had the bbq chicken, which was very good and had an amazing smokey flavor to it. I had the extra smokey burger which was amazing. It had huge pieces of peppered bacon and gouda cheese on it. We also had the pleasure of trying the strawberry shortcake for dessert. My daughter is not a fan of strawberries, but she was in love with this dessert. The short bread was made to perfection and all I can say is yummm. I would definitely recommend this place.

Absolutely amazing. Great service, great selection of local beer on draft. Clean, nice TV's for games, excellent fresh beef burgers cooked to perfection. Clean establishment. Friendly staff and awesome happy hour specials. Highly recommend this place! Bathrooms are clean as well.

The Greek salad & vinaigrette were really good. The wings had lots of good meat on them but I don't like sauce when I order dry.

If I could give a half a star I would. We ordered drinks...my beer was very good....but my girlfriends beach berry was basically a screwdriver and the owner who graciously introduced herself earlier to us..brought out the drink with no straw. Sooooo we had to wait another 5 minutes to ask for one...we ordered cornbread and since they had two selections...we got both. I had regular cornbread and she had jalapeño. Both were dry and taste like it was made day before and reheated. So I'm saying.....ok....hopefully the burgers are better.... Umm no. My burger was over cooked...asked for medium got it well done....and I could still taste the grill residue on the burger. My side of broccoli had freezer burn and was served unseasoned. My girlfriends burger was exactly the same but she ordered hers well done and it came out burnt along with more grill residue. So after all was said and done the bill came to $58.00 and then tip....I paid it willingly with my decision to never come back. I'm even more bothered the owner who seemed so proud would let her cooking staff hang out near the bar....all with tees and baseball caps. Seriously.....if you want to make a statement to the customers...this one I took as an owner who truly doesn't care about perception and quality. Hopefully after reading this they will correct those issues or I don't see this place operating much longer under these conditions.

Nice place but not many customers. Staff has no idea what the brewery produces. Food was good. Beer has potential. I liked the coffee brown try it. I hope they can get motivated and stay open. Don't forget to check the restrooms people!

Amazing! We had such a wonderful experience that all started with the hostess walking next door to Kitty Hawk to let us know our table was ready because we have a 5 year old - what customer service! Our server was prompt, knowledgeable, and very fast with service. Food was excellent!!

  • Jim B.

A pretty cool place. The beer brewed on site was good, we had the flight. The three chip dip was tasty. The guacamole was a little bland but the Gouda cream (basically like white queso dip) was good and the salsa was different in a good way (I think cumin). Had the extra smokey burger which was really tasty and got the corn bread as a side with it. The corn bread was great with the bacon jam. Server was very friendly and the service was pretty quick.

Wasn't thrilled. Wings were odd. Food was decent. TV's only on one wall - and it was the World Cup semi's. Decent beer selection. Shortcake looked nothing like the pictures I saw on Yelp.

Great food and great atmosphere! The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable! Had the republic plate with the bacon jelly! An amazing combination with the cornbread. All local beers on tap ( a huge plus in supporting local businesses) will definitely recommend this place to friends and family and will be back sooner rather than later! Thank you Johnny and Lauren and kudos to the chef!

Maybe it's really hopping at night and I missed it, it's a brewery after all. Came for lunch on a Saturday and there weren't many people in the area, maybe because no one went to the beach when a huge storm was approaching. Anyway I got an omelette that I wasn't thrilled about. The potatoes that went with it were bland and undercooked. My friend got watermelon gazpacho and we drooled at the thought but when it came it was so overseasoned/spicy that it was inedible. I added a few dribbles to my omelette for a kick, like adding tabasco. Not the A-team cooks on the weekend days I guess. Probably should have gotten a burger, the reviews rave about it, but it's summer and I live by the beach. Blessing and a curse.

The service was great, the server sparked conversation with us and served good food fast. The only reason I give a four is that the burger was overcooked.

  • Audra S.

Overall not good. If you are a true craft beer person then you won't like it. The selection is dismal, we had to resort to bottled beer. The service was slow and it wasn't busy. We ate are while appetizer without silverware or napkins. Food came out cold. I had the spinach cakes which were salty, my son had the BBQ chicken which was average, macaroni was cold ad was my broccoli which wouldn't even melt a butter tab. My husband had the galaxy burger which was average. The in house made dessets consist of Plain cheesecake. Overall wouldn't be visiting here again. The food and beer selection was much better one block up at Lager Heads!

While on vacation, we like to find some local flavor and this place is local owned by a couple of vets. They mix up their own burgers and make their own beers. They have a variety of local beer also on tap. I had the Galaxy and my wife had the Extra Smoky, we both thought that they were the best burgers in Virginia Beach. The staff were friendly and service was prompt.

The place is clean, inviting, service is excellent. They have patio seating and indoor seating. Bar and tables are available. They have 2 big and 1 small TV for the restaurant where the bar is. The beer selection is awesome! It is local mainly which is great. It is organized and just enough options where you dont feel overwhelmed. The pumpking ale was delicious! I ordered the crab cakes with asparagus and mashed potatoes---AMAZING! Perfect amount and so flavorful. Great service, food menu, beer selection, and atmosphere!

This restaurant has great potential. We came for lunch on a Sunday with our 18 month old, and sat out on the patio. We were lucky enough to sit at a table with an umbrella, but we probably wouldn't have stayed if we didn't. Maybe investing in more umbrellas would help. Their selection of beer in unbelievable, my husband was impressed with all of the ones that he tried. The food on the other hand was lacking. My husband ordered the she crab soup and when he recieved it, it was basically all oil. His burger was cooked just the way he liked it and fully enjoyed it. I ordered a chicken wrap and it was wasn't good. The dressing had a weird flavor. The chicken, while seasoned well, was overcooked. I don't know if we just went on a bad day, but we're willing to go back and try again.

A great local and veteran owned restaurant. The Wife and I went back to Home Republic to give them a second try and were so glad we did. The staff was exceptional as they were last time with Tiffany, Lauren, and Barbara making sure everything was just right and they all were just as genuinely pleasant as before. The staff is so over the top nice that you feel like you are a close friend. Home Republic will be a top pick for us when we want to go out for good food and a great atmosphere. I failed last time to tell you how nice Home Republic is. The restaurant is clean with a really hip/chic look, plenty of seating at the bar, tables, an outside patio area and a very nice bistro/lounge seating area. It has a great vibe, 2 blocks from the beach and has lots of local brews to pair with the wonderful food. A guaranteed repeat! Last time we went there were some minor issues but I have to report that the food was awesome. Previously I had a check issue but found out that it was due to some hardware problems which required the staff to enter checks into a central POS not their iPad based POS. This caused some drinks to be accidentally added to our tab. Happy to report the issue was an isolated problem and everything was taken care of by the owners when they were made aware of the issue. Superb customer service.

Went there with my family on a Monday night in July. It is a couple blocks away from the boardwalk so it was fairly empty. I liked the decor and always appreciate outdoor seating. We ordered the grilled watermelon salad, the republic burger, galaxy burger, the extra smokey burger, and cuban panini. The grilled watermelon salad is a perfect seasonal dish with the refreshing watermelon pieces. Nice balance with the arugula, candied peanuts, and goat cheese. The republic burger was on point especially the bacon jam! They need to bottle that and sell that! Unfortunately, everything else wasn't so good. The other two burgers were so burnt that eventually my dad and sister just had to cut off the burnt parts, which was about 3/4 of the burger. The galaxy had bacon that was burnt to the crisp and had to be remade. They were nice and quickly cooked two pieces to perfection, but if they weren't watching the soccer game on tv instead, the burgers and bacon probably wouldn't have been overcooked in the first place. The cuban panini was okay, just an overwhelming amount of mustard. Simply, only go for the brewery and bacon jam.

How does this place have 4/5 stars? Burnt/overly charred burger that was ordered "medium." Undercooked, under seasoned broccoli (veg of the day), uninspired fries. I should've stayed in Norfolk and trusted my gut with good old 80/20. Heck, the Wendy's down the street on Pacific would've been better. Honestly, this place only had one good thing they served: west coast beers. Would not recommend for those that believe this is a true gastropub. Follow up: burnt burger was sent back, new order had the wrong toppings. Follow up: manager came over and apologized profusely. Apparently there's a new summer crew in training which led to the mistakes. He comped both my meal (which was correct) and my fiancée's (the charred burger/incorrect order) and gave his business card. Stand up manager, I'd say. Nevertheless, a bit more oversight might have prevented the error to begin with.

Poor service. Food took forever to come out and it was a simple burger. Waitress hasn't been back to ask if I wanted a refill on my beer. 20 minutes after ordering, the waitress comes out and says her meal was "sold out" and was not available. Never again.

I'll be bold and give Home Republic a whopping 5 stars because they really have their shit together. The stellar menu had interesting choices, and everything we ordered was pretty amazing. My fiance even dared to tell our super sweet waitress that he was enjoying THE BEST burger he'd ever tasted in his entire life-- no BS. Drinks were equally interesting-- the IPA Bloody Mary was a first for me, and certainly did not disappoint. Absolutely hoppy and most def spicy. Being that the weather was simply gorgeous, we sat outside at a cute little table under an umbrella, and it wasn't until I ventured inside to use the bathroom that I realized how awesome the interior was.Totally unexpected and way chill. It's REALLY NICE. Only being in VA Beach for 4 days, we didn't have enough time to hit this place up again, but I so so so wished that we could have. Maybe next time we're in town. Great find. Keep up the good work, you guys!

We visited this place last Sunday afternoon after spending the day by the beach. A wonderful atmosphere- we're hoping many more places like this will pop and succeed in the beach area. Had a light lunch and a few beers including the IPA (which was excellent). Food was mediocre- nothing special- then again haven't tried much stuff on the menu. Would return 100% for the beers. Owner and staff were extremely friendly. Just FYI this is a microbrew only so if you're looking for a cocktail they won't have it.

Brand new place, smells like it too. The food is nothing short of amazing. I tried the zucchini and quinoa lasagna (curiously no pasta involved... Bonus, really!) and was seriously impressed. The service was attentive enough. They were playing country the whole time I was here, which for someone who lives in Houston makes me wonder if can ever get away from it (spoiler alert: I can't)... Anyway the place is rather charming and the food is phenomenal. There is a couch loungy area where a group could sip wine and listen to Toby Keith... Maybe Jack Ingram...

This place is a gem! While vacationing in Virginia Beach a couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon this place. It had just opened a few days prior to my visit. The outdoor seating was perfect for just hanging out and catching a beer for happy hour. After having a couple of drinks during happy hour, we left to go shopping. We eventually went back an hour or so later because we liked the place so much. The staff was very friendly and the owner came out to chat with my party. The owner was a very chill guy who was very knowledgeable about the local breweries. He even informed us that he planned to start brewing there (can't wait to go back and try his brew). My boyfriend had the Young Veterans IPA, which is a local beer. He claims it is the best IPA he's ever had. I also had a pineapple wheat beer by Young Veterans. I wish I lived closer to Va Beach because YV doesn't bottle their brew! Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anybody. The food and drink selection is diverse & there is something for every appetite.

Great happy hour and food in general is reasonably priced and very fresh. Solid spot with awesome tap list, really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Very local, friendly and foodie feel here. Try the cornbread with BACON jam, real crab meat soup, or any of the entrees. If you like great beer and fresh grilled food you need to stop here!

General comment: after a long day at the beach, this place was perfect for filling burgers and delicious local beers walking distance from the Hilton's. Food: I got the smokey burger with grilled potatoes and drank flight 1 with my boyfriend. If you love the char taste from a BBQ, you'll love this burger. Has fresh guacamole, bacon and delicious toasted buns! I usually don't like beer but flight 1 with the sampling shots were the best beers I've ever had! Service: great service and the place is clean, vibrant and beautiful Price: with everything made fresh, price is perfect! The $$ is a great price for a vacation outing. Conclusion: will definitely come back next time I go va beach for vacation :)

Very pleased with my experience! The owners came up several times to ensure we were doing ok as well as letting us try their new personal brewed beer. The food was great, I had the crab cakes with asparagus and mashed potatoes, the beer was even better and got it on happy hour (3-7)... We will most definitely be back! Oh and the atmosphere was just great!!!

Wanting to try something new for dinner I happened upon this place through Yelp. The staff are super firendly and the food was decent. The wings were pretty good too. They have to bake them do to their proximity to BWW. I tried a drink off their wine trail menu, a wine mixer with jalapeno and was pleasantly surprised. My only issue was with the food portion. They had a happy hour special for bbq chicken. The chicken and dallop of mashed potatoes caused me to be in search of food hours later. My party had concern with many of the local drafts being sold out. It made beer selection difficult. However, the plus side is they carry many local beers and will soon start serving their own. Decent place, decent food and drink, but they could do better in serving larger portions. The location itself is nice depemding on how you look at it. Located in the new North End are of Virginia Beach, it is close to the beach. For locals this may be a no-go during tourists months.

Visited on 8/1/2014 for a flight and some food. The inside is simple but nice and open. Not a lot of seating. Had a flight of beer. All was from Virginia, which was nice to try. We tried the she crab soup, watermelon gazpacho, and corn bread (not the jalapeno corn bread because they hadn't made it yet for the day). The she crab soup was ok. It was your typical creamy soup. I wouldn't recommend getting it here. If you want some good she crab soup try it at the Isle of Capri. The watermelon gazpacho was actually really good. Served chilled with lump crab in it. Had a nice spice to it. The corn bread was acceptable, nothing outstanding about it. Our waitress, Stacie, was not the best. She didn't seemed to be concerned with her job. Took awhile for her to take our order. We were there in the middle of the day and she couldn't have had more than 3 tables. I had asked about the shirts they had displayed and she didn't know anything about them. She showed me one that was a large. When I asked if she had a different size she said she wasn't sure but she had to go get one of her tables and walked away. Needless to say I walked out of there without a shirt.

Spacious interior with some outdoor seating. Relatively new establishment, from what I was told by the staff. Still going through some growing pains, but the potential is there. Creative menu, especially for appetizers. Can't speak much to the alcohol side, didn't partake. Several types of burgers to choose. I did like the location, off of Atlantic Ave and away from the crowds.

Stumbled across this restaurant while we were out on a stroll. Checked the menu on the door, saw the beer list, and decided to try them out. Great choice. We thought it was pretty cool that all of the beers that were on tap were Virginia brews. Good to see something of a Virginia branding going on. There were 8 taps, all of which offered a different flavor profile. Even though the food was limited, neither my husband or I had any problem finding something that sounded interesting, and tasted great. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the great Virginia Beach weather and listened to a beach music playlist. Our server balanced the challenge of being attentive without hovering beautifully. The one thing we were confused about was why we were the only people there for the majority of our meal. We asked our server who told us the lack of patrons was not the norm. We also found out that the restaurant had only been opened a few weeks. Great place. Hope the crowd picks up on this place, because we would love to go back when we come through Virginia Beach again. My only suggestion to this restaurant would be to showcase some of the Virginia wines on their wine list. As I mentioned, it was cool to see the Virginia brews, but we've sampled some of the Virginia wines and were very impressed with them as well. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing.

The food was awesome and service couldn't have been better. We tried the reuben special and the omelet. They started brewing beer and although we aren't beer people the manager was so welcoming and brought us samples. We have a toddler and they made him feel welcome. We will definitely be back here. The music and vibe is really relaxed, comfortable and fun.

5+ stars on beer selection and atmosphere. 5 stars on service. Good was alright, burgers were great. Had the Cuban panini and it tasted somewhat stale. Could've been a one time thing. Highly recommend the place if you want to kickback and have a few with some friends

My husband and I have been coming here since they opened earlier this year. We love Home Republic's happy hour specials and the bacon jam is to die for! The staff is super friendly, the burgers are fantastic and the craft beer selection is top notch. We love this restaurant!

I went there for the first time a few days ago and will definitely be back! Enjoyable atmosphere, great service and the food was very good. I had a salad that was very fresh and I will definitely order it again. The dressing was also exceptional. My husband had one of the speciality burgers and loved it. The side of grilled potatoes were sliced thin with a wonderful seasoning on it. The staff was friendly and quick to please. I will not only be back, but plan on bringing friends with me! very nice beer list (and i especially like the local beers)

The food was amazing, the location is perfect and the drinks are delicious. I had never been here before but was looking to try something new and off the beaten path. Holy mess this was well worth it!! I had the smokey burger with guac and bacon. I've never had a better burger before. Literally perfection on a grilled bun. The happy hour deal made the burger even better. Secondly, the drinks. All the beer is virginia brewed which is awesome and delicious. I'd recommend the Chesapeake pale ale. YUM! HAppy hour deals here also made it well worth it. Third, location location location. Just than a block from the beach you get all the vacation feel without being smothered by tourists (which as a local is much appreciated). With the outdoor seating you get the sounds of the beach and the outdoor vibes. There was even local music! Overall an amazing experience that I would definitely recommend! I will be returning and bringing all my friends!

This was almost good. The ambiance and decor are sophisticated and understated, whetting the appetite for adult tastes and creative menus. While the food was certainly edible, the experience was just ruined by poor service and a complete screwup in flow. Burgers (sans fries- they don't offer them on the menu) arrived before the salads, and our waitress was surprised that I objected to the switch. She descended on us immediately after arrival to take our order, offered to take my order separately since he was still undecided, and then didn't return for our decision for almost 10 minutes. The long and short of it is that this is a brew house that doesn't (yet) brew, staffed with inexperienced help, and burdened by a very limited menu. The positives (good flavors and an exhaustive artisan beer menu) are very difficult to appreciate when the service is slow, confused, and ineffective.

Excellent beer selection.!! Brand new place.!! I would have given 5 stars however had to send Ribs back due to being under cooked. The chef came out and apologized. Plus the owner kick in a free beer and desert which in my book more that made up for the error. Wait staff was great and friendly.!!

Beers were pretty good. I had both beer flights and liked the Saison the best. She crab soup was not good - like eating salad dressing but the crab in it was good. I had the Republic plate which was a steak skewer and a shrimp skewer with cornbread. Cornbread was nice with beer. Shrimp skewer was well cooked and nicely seasoned. Steak was well cooked and seasoned but not the best cut and was tough. Service was excellent, even outside which was nice.

Best meal of our vacation! Great, personable service, wonderful menu, and the best tastes of anyplace we've had in a long, long time. Impressive beer selection, draft & bottles, incl. local brews, AND beer flights!! We can't wait to return and see what desserts your chef has concocted! Johnny & team, keep up the great work!

kinda disappointed compared aired to the reviews here. I had the strip witch was room temp when I got it. not awhile lot of flavor in it. the saving grace of this place is a great beer selection and the Bacon jam and the tomato jam both were great. the cheese and sausage plater was nothing special. the crab cakes were pretty good and a saving grace is the energy of the area

What can I say that hasn't already been said by many other reviewers? "Ditto" on all the positive comments. Ditto, Ditto, Ditto. Last night, 1/8/2015, My husband and I decided to give this place a try (he invited a group of his co-workers) and by 6:30, we'd moved at least 5 maybe 6 tables together to accommodate our 14 or so group. We started out at the bar, Lauren offered suggestions and was happy to give a taste of whatever we wanted. I had the Kolsch and stuck with it. My husband had the Holiday Stout and also stuck with it. Once we were all seated, Joe stopped by to check on us - and Emily was the young lady that took EXCELLENT care of us. WOW!!! There was another large group of people (birthday party) and the ladies/gents that took care of the tables seemed to do it flawlessly. Amazing. Looking back, I guess we should have called ahead and 'warned' them that we were having a large group. Regardless, they handled it well. Again, Joe, and Emily frequently checked on us - and Barbara also stopped in to see if all was well. Excellent customer service. Food: We split a smokey burger - a lot of bun; I took the bun off and just focused on the meat/toppings. I ordered steamed broccoli and although it could have used some seasoning, it was yummy. My husband had the Republic platter, meat and shrimp on a stick with onion, squash, and zucchini. Along with that was the jalapeno bread with bacon jam that everyone seems to love. We enjoyed both of our dishes. I wish the owners all the best with this new place. We'll certainly return. Thanks for putting up with us - Emily - you rock! How you handled all of us coming at you with our arms in the air ..... you didn't miss a thing. Thanks for taking such good care of us. I'm always a stickler for customer service - you all have it down to a T.

Pretty good for VA Beach. Nothing spectacular. Nice spot to end/start your night. Food is good. Service good.

After a long day enjoying the sun, sand, and waves at Virginia Beach, our group of a dozen wandered into Home Republic for an early supper. At the time we were seated, we were the only party inside, and had no trouble immediately getting a table. I appreciated that all of the beers were local. I tried the pineapple hefeweizen, and while the incorporation of pineapple was not as thorough as I had imagined it would be, it was still a tasty draft at a reasonable ($5.50) price. I was only a bit peckish and more in the mood for a light bite, so I ordered the republic plate (one steak skewer, one shrimp skewer, and some house cornbread) as my main. They were out of the steak, so I subbed a chicken skewer instead; I was surprised to find that it was my favorite of the three items. The shrimp were very tough (most likely overcooked), and the skewer only came with three particularly small specimens. My husband ordered the extra smokey burger, of which I sampled a few bites. The burger was delicious--a juicy and flavorful patty topped with perfectly harmonized accompaniments. However, aside from the fact that the burger itself was on the small side, the meat-to-bun ratio was way off; the patty was much smaller than the bun it was served on, resulting in too many bread-only bites. Also, why no fries? The side options to accompany your burger include mashed potatoes (huh?) or grilled potatoes (which I would most closely liken to very thickly cut potato chips). The grilled potatoes were very tasty, but the serving was pretty stingy ... only a few slices to accompany each burger. What with the low cost of potatoes and the high prices of these burgers (the extra smokey was $13), they could easily offer twice as many potato slices and make the plate more filling. In the end, many of the people at our table who ordered burgers remarked that they were not full at the end of the meal. Based on the small-ish portions and the odd side offerings, it definitely looks like they're trying to go for a gourmet feel. While I certainly appreciate attention to detail when it comes to the flavor and presentation of my food, a restaurant will never win points with me by overcharging for small portions. Food aside, the most glaring issue we had during our meal was with the tempo of service. I don't know if the kitchen has kinks to work out, but they proceeded to (very slowly) send out one plate of food at a time. There must have been at least a half hour in between the arrival of the first meal and that of the last meal ... the diner in our group whose food came out first finished her plate well before the last plate even arrived. (The food arrived so slowly that the concept of waiting for the entire table to be served before anyone ate was ludicrous; everything would have been completely cold if we had waited for everyone's meals to arrive.) It was so outrageous that it became laughable; we were cracking up over food deliveries that were reminiscent of ants bringing food particles to the colony one crumb at a time. I realize that we were a fairly large party, but it really was just absurd. The food was delicious (even if the portions were too small), but the service was problematic. I would consider returning if I were in the area again, but only if I were looking for a light meal.

Excitedly took the family here based on the positive reviews but left disappointed. We came for dinner around 6:30 the night of the NCAA championship game. "We're out of wings and almost out of burgers," we were told by our friendly waitress. How does a gastropub run out of wings and burgers BEFORE a huge sporting event with nice, wide-screen tv's primed for the big event? Had the seafood and sausage gumbo. It was absolutely inedible. Should've been named 5-alarm gumbo due to its overly spicy composition. Speaking of which, I'm still trying to locate the seafood to go along with the 3 or 4 slices of sausage. On the plus side, the price of the gumbo was taken off the bill, as it should have. Quite a shame to have to pan this place, as my beer was outstanding. Perhaps they're shaking off the winter rust and weren't quite in mid-season form? One can only hope.

I sat at the corner of the bar near the kitchen. Much of the food was precooked (different than prepped). They placed the dirty dishes right in front of me and then scrapped the plates into the trash underneath the bar. The smoky burger was overcooked (I ordered medium-rare) and the two sauces dominated the flavor. The mashed potatoes were precooked a while a go, were very starchy and presented like a high school cafeteria. The staff did not impress and came across like they were uninterested, which surprised me since it is new and only open roughly two months. The positive is that Home Republic has a local beer menu. I was also told that they received their license to start making beer and a small area has been identified in the restaurant. I will not return.

A very fun atmosphere. Sidewalk table area with music, great happy hour and very friendly service. Food was a three but it was a brand new menu. Will certainly be back.

Seems like a newer place, but very good food. A couple of blocks away from the Neptune sculpture, but an easy walk. Clean, cool looking place, quick and efficient service with great food! We had crab cakes and a fried watermelon salad. Excellent! The pickles that came with the crab cakes were awesome! They helped elevate the already great crab cakes into something memorable. Since theyre newer I hope they make it. Great local craft beers, excellent food, good service. What more can you ask for?

So sad to see this place go downhill so fast. When they first opened and a couple months after, the food was great along with the service. Then slowly but surely they would consistently be out of something. When there's only a few things on the menu, there shouldn't be a reason to be constantly out of something. Then we went this weekend. The steaks were terrible! We asked the waitress if they had changed them. She said "nooooo I don't think so". She came back a while later and said they had changed the menu. The cooks looked like kids and just didn't care at all about what they were doing. The waitress wasn't all that great either. Nobody seemed to care at all about what was going on, how the food was cooked, or even the presentation of it. When we voiced our concerns, the waitress came back and said the manager said to take 10% off. Typically, the manager should come out themselves and ask what the matter was, etc. Particularly if the food was barely touched. This place started out great and had a ton of potential. Sorely disappointed.

Great place to grab dinner 2 blocks from the beach in Virginia Beach (right down from the Poseidon statue). Food was delicious (bacon jam! great burgers!), enjoyed the beer flight, and loved the outdoor seating. It was great to be so close to the beach without being overly-packed. The dessert we tried (cheesecake) was great -- not too rich, very tasty. It's definitely worth dropping by for a beer or a meal.

Dropped by on Sunday night on Labor Day weekend. The owner greeted us at the door and let us know that they got hit harder than expected and there would be a 45 min wait on food. We decided to stay anyway and sat at the bar for a while. The bartender was super nice and helped us pick out some beer to drink. We went and sat at their outdoor seating and put in our order. Food ended up coming sooner than we anticipated. Everything was pretty good, except my burger and chicken sandwich were pretty charred. They gave us a DELICIOUS strawberry shortcake on the house to make up for the wait. Will definitely be back whenever we're in the area.

My family and I were on vacation and passed by this place walking to our hotel. We decided to go later that evening for dinner. The service was really good and the food was great. We tried both flights of beers, they were both filled with good virginia beers that we shared. There was live music inside but we decided to eat outside because of the nice weather. This will be a place I go back to again and I would highly recommend it to others!

This is a great little brew house restaurant that brews it's own craft beers. PROS: We really enjoyed the pumpkin brew called "oh my gourd"and the cup a Joe, which was a chocolate, coffee stout. Liked the watermelon wheat as well. This is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy a few speciality beers. We didn't eat here, but the food that we saw on other tables looked very appealing. CONS: Not really any I could think of. The place was dead for a weekend night, but that's probably because it's not the high season in VA beach. OVERALL: Put this on your list to grab some craft brews at very reasonable prices. You'll pay twice these prices just a block over on Atlantic ave by the beach. This place was much better than the ones by the beach.

Came to home republic for my boyfriends birthday. Everything was decent but nothing to spectacular. The corn bread was definetly the best thing here and the bacon jam was very good and I don't even eat bacon- I know I'm strange. I got the barbecue chicken it was pretty average... The chicken avocado wrap was pretty amazing though. The pumpkin beer!- one of the best by far. The service was on point- no complaints here! Recommend for a chill evening with some average bar food! And great beer!

This place was wonderful. We came just at the start of trivia night and were lucky to be seated when someone did not show for their reservation. The host (we think the owner) was very accommodating. Playing trivia was a bonus as we had no idea Tuesday night would be anything special. Was a fun game, but be careful between 7 and 9 on Tuesday. We were looking for a good burger near the boardwalk and found it. I had a Galaxy Burger, dripping with wonderful sauce but not soaking through the bun. Fries were crisp and well seasoned. I recommend their saison as well. Wife had the grilled chicken sandwich, delicious; she added their homemade Chipotle mayo with a nice kick. Kids menu Mac and cheese was rich and wonderful - we're hoping he doesn't want the leftovers so we can eat it! Service was quick despite the crowd, very attentive, and very friendly with our 3 year old.

I stopped here for dinner one night while in the area for training. I tried their "Bock to the Future" and the "Cup of Joe". Both were very good. I had grilled chicken with baked potato and veggies for dinner, which was also very good. If I were in the area again, I would most likely return.

I heard that they were having an Elite event here and opted to give the place a try ahead of time. And giving it a try was a good idea! Sure, there were only five other people in the restaurant (three were staff) so I took a seat at the bar. Lots of local beers and some brewed on site. I can't remember which I chose, but it was a very tasty beverage. No appetizer today, I went right to the meat of it so to speak. The "Extra Smoky Burger" had a chipotle mayo, gouda (which is a smoked cheese, donchaknow?), bacon and smokey guacamole (whatever that means). When it arrived, it was a big patty cooked how I requested (I had to confirm that I really did want it medium rare) with a lot of bacon. Quite messy, quite tasty. Beer. Bacon. Burger. Get on it.

My fiancé & I were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary after just having engagement photos taken on the boardwalk. I had remembered that we were supposed to have a Yelp event at Home Republic & wanted to give them a try. For us beers & burgers are way better than some stuffy place. Cool spot with a large bar, a little sitting area where another couple was enjoying a few beers, & tables. We were immediately greeted when we walked in & seated. We both had to try their in house IPA & it was pretty good. We started with their jalepeno cornbread with butter & their bacon jam. OMG delicious. Soooo yum. The manager/owner? came by to see how we were doing & was a super nice dude. He brought us out their strawberry blonde ale to sample & I was blown away by how delish it was! I ordered a pint before I was even done with my IPA. Everything on their menu sounded great, my fella went with one of their burgers that was topped with guacamole & bacon. He loved the bacon jam so much that he asked for some on the side to add. I went with their crab cakes with a side of Mac & cheese & a baked potato. Bikini body be damned. I can't wait to go back & try more of their burgers! The bite I had of my man's was awesome. The service & hospitality we received was fabulous. We were even sent a delicious strawberry shortcake on the house, how nice of them! We'll be frequenting this place a lot more this summer.

Virginia Beach is experiencing a rising craft beer scene. In addition to visiting Back Bay Brewing, I also visited Home Republic during a recent trip. Home Republic is restaurant, brewpub, and wine shop all in one. They have a very small brewing system that they are using to put out some interesting beers like their Blue Berrymore, which is brewed with twenty pounds of blueberries per barrel. They also feature a variety of craft beer drafts from neighboring breweries and from around the U.S. I was able to try Young Veterans Brewing Jet Noise, a tasty double IPA from the Virginia Beach brewery which was founded in 2012. The food is made from scratch and the menu features plenty of sandwiches and burgers, along with a small selection of entrées featuring baby back ribs and crab cakes. My wife tried the quinoa and black bean veggie burger topped with spinach, tomato, and sautéed onions with a side of fries ($13). The addition of quinoa to the patty was unique and something that I'd like to see more of. I went with the Cuban panini featuring roasted pork, Smithfield ham, and Swiss topped with pickles and mustard ($13). For my side I went with the veggies and was given a massive serving of steamed broccoli that was slightly under-cooked for my tastes. The sandwich was quite tasty, especially the ham which I've learned is a local specialty. Home Republic is a great place for a quality meal.

So after staying in the sticks just south of VB, I was in dire need of a real beer. I'm not talking about Blue Moon or Sam Adams, I'm talking about a solid double IPA, brewed with passion, sweat and tears. Cork and Craft delivered this and then some. I was sincerely impressed with their beer selection and the beertenders. Everyone was super friendly and my glass never saw less than 4 ounces without being asked what my next selection was. I have been to VB a few times before this and actually grew to dislike it with a fierce passion. Well, that has now changed ever since I found this awesome establishment that serves up local, quality craft beer. Thank you Cork and Craft for giving VB an ounce of hope.

I made it a point to discover some fun, new places to try with my roommate and one of my best friends who just recently moved to VA Beach, and in the back of my mind I was secretly hoping to be able to combine that with drinking some craft beer. Home Republic made both of those wishes come true. We decided to go for Friday happy hour, since their specials looked great and we wanted dinner on the earlier end of the night. Around 6:00 we got there and were immediately given a table. It filled up over the course of the next hour, but I was pleased to see the room wasn't completely packed out. The space was large and the tables were spread further apart than I'm used to in Pittsburgh, which gave the impression of the place being very open. There's nothing worse than bumping into other patrons or yelling over loud music when you're out for dinner trying to get caught up with old friends. We split the chips and three dips appetizer with a round of drinks to start. Our waitress was able to give solid input about what appetizers to order as well as which drinks were the most popular and why. I was quite impressed by her professionalism and confidence in that regard. I tried their black IPA, and it was incredible! I loved the espresso notes it had, and the hops were present without being overpowering. Overly hoppy IPA's that lack complexity are just as nasty as bitter, cheap coffee...nobody needs that! The chips and dips were delicious as well. I could only eat the salsa and smoky guacamole, but both were surprisingly flavorful. The queso dip was also incredible according to my friends. We each ordered separate entrees to get a good feel for the menu. Mine was the beer BBQ chicken with fries, and my friends got the smoky burger and the Home Republic plate, which was a skewer of shrimp, a skewer of steak, and cornbread. I loved the chicken and fries. It was simple but had good flavor and wasn't too greasy. Too much grease with a heavy beer completely sucks, so I was glad I went with the chicken. Both of the other ladies had great things to say about the burger and the shrimp and steak skewer plate as well. Overall, I felt the portions were generous and the quality of the food itself was on par with the drinks. The non-happy hour food prices are maybe a few dollars higher than I'd prefer, however Home Republic is in a more touristy section of VA Beach so this is to be expected. We ended our meal with a group photo taken by our lovely waitress and plans to come back some time in the future. It was most definitely a successful evening!

Good news, beer is great and cornbread starters were good. The food could have been great, but the service and cooks left us disappointed. Our Chicken wrap was "lost in translation" ie completely forgotten, 4 signature burgers waited under the heat light for 12 minutes waiting to be served, thankfully the bar staff was accommodating to give us ketchup, mustard and mayo after requests made to wait staff went in answered. Back to those 4 signature burgers, we ordered medium, one came medium and all of them burned black on the he outside.

This review is from my husband because I didn't get the chance to eat here. He got the Republic burger to go and yes, agrees with all the other reviews that this is hands down the best burger he's ever had. The bacon jelly was beyond words!! He also loved the Republic cup of Joe beer. If you like coffee this is the beer for you.

This review is long overdue, but here goes... The hubs and I had a nice time here on an early Friday evening before the beach really gets busy. We sampled a couple of flights and each had a burger. I always enjoy flights for sampling, especially when it's local beer. The food was solid. The staff was friendly. One guy in particular had us in stitches talking about the Handsome Biscuit (Which I still have yet to try!) in Norfolk. At some point I'd like to get back down there, and on a day when it's busier. I think the vibe would really take this place up a notch with a good crowd.

Oh wow! Came here because I was craving a burger and this restaurant had some good reviews... bottom line, this place did not disappoint. Because I was in a time crunch, I ordered takeout... so this review is strictly on the food. I ordered the Republic Burger and man was it tasty! The flavoring, the egg, the meat... excellent!!! I liked it so much, I came back the next day. If you're craving a burger, stop here!!!

This place has a great atmosphere. Right when you walk in you are greeted and sat promptly. I enjoy being in places were people like to have fun and chat with you. And being from Boston I'm used to getting crap for everything we do. I like when everyone down from the server and host/manager can be fun with you and make jokes. When you're on vacation you want to enjoy your time. Going here was enjoyable. To start, the watermelon sangria was delicious! My friend and I were searching for the best sangria's while on vacation and this one took top prize. Most placing don't understand how to make a proper sangria, but not at Home Republic. The crab cake meal was delicious. There was actual crab meat in it! And you could tell it was freshly made and not overly salty/seasoned. My friend had the quinoa cakes (because really we've never seen that and HAD to try it). They were good, but the sauce on top was bit over-powering in flavor (but edible). Overall, the food was well worth the stop in. If you're in the area, stop by have some sangria and enjoy your time on vacation!

At first I hesitated going here because of the price of a burger, but i will have to say that I was impressed and the burger and fries, well worth it! Selection of beer was prefect. A selection you can't find elsewhere. Even though they do brew their own beer I ordered Devils Backbone:turbo cougar. Great summer beer. Also, I got the republic burger. Usually I order my burgers med-rare, but it was suggested I get it medium. When I bit into it, the juice just came out. Yum! The flavor was on point. I love fries, fries were some of the best I have ever had. Just try this restaurant out.

Awesome bar experience! Justin and I were trying to kill time so we decided to stop by and get a drink here. The bartender here was extremely friendly and interactive which was nice. We went in the afternoon so there weren't too-too many people, but they had a happy hour bar special at the time with the most amazing wings. The wings like melt in your mouth and the meat falls off the bone. For the quality of the wings, and the low price, it's an awesome deal! I would get the regular ones if you don't like spicy, because the spicy lovers would definitely love the spicy ones. The beers here are awesome too. We tried a Virginia Local beer and a hard cider since I don't really like the taste of beer :P The bar is pretty big and everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves.

GOOD NEWS!!! THE GREATEST THING TO HAVE EVER GRACED THIS BLESSED EARTH IS HERE. NO, IT ID NOT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST HIMSELF BUT RATHER BACON JAM!!! quite literally the greatest moat amazing topping ever created. It has changed my life on biblical proportions. These burgers are hands down amazing. For a last meal I would order their signature republic burger with extra bacon jam. Very very satisfied and with most excellent service. Nice clean atmosphere with a great waitstaff. We ordered appetizers and drinks. The spicey guacamole had a great taste along w the Gouda cheese. The goat cheese salad a little sweet but good. The beers on tap are the best aspect. $1.75 gets you a small glass of anything on tap. Sea devil is a wonderful smooth stout. Lot of local craft beers. This place is definitly worth a stop. Also very friendly with children. Feel free to bring the young and old.

This place had to be thought of by the Einstein of brewing. The fact that they're pulling in the other local/statewide breweries to take over their taps on the weekly is beyond the level of genious. I'm becoming a Thursday regular due to this weekly event. I get to try some fantastic beers as well as their own brews. The best part of it is that this place can grow from the other breweries and mix it up a bit with their own brews with some sweet collaborations! Also, this saves me the trouble of having to drive from brewery to brewery to have local flavor. The other breweries rely on food trucks but this place is an actual restaurant as well so you can grub as you please. As a matter of fact, the specials here are pretty epic! They just came out with a new menu today (March 5th) and they tossed in a new burger called the Galaxy Burger! Along with some random specials, the comfy atmosphere, kind staff and large amount of swag you can purchase, this place is brewing heaven!

Really, really a god burger. Probably the best I have had in Virginia Beach. That said, it cost $14 and came with a couple of very plain pieces of broccoli (one was a little brown). Also I had the $10 chips / salsa / guac plate, and was disappointed. Small portions in little plastic cups, and the guac and salsa were gone while over half the chips remained. The server brought the check as soon as I finished my burger and I still had over half a beer left. I probably would have stayed for another beer, but whatever. We sat outside on a Friday and they had a dude playing the guitar between this place and the restaurant next door. Not too loud either, so it was nice.

Located not too far from Neptunes park. Outdoor seating is fairly close to the street, too close for me. Decent inside comfortably spaced, they could definitely setup additional seating without much notice. We ordered a The Galaxy, The Extra Smokey, and beer bbq chips chicken. We also ordered three different brews. I'd like to note that the Galaxy and Juice Sea Fruit ipa were paired really well to my liking. The chicken was overcooked the fries we had to send back because they came out cold. The extra smokey was not a game changer. Everyone enjoyed my beer the Juice Sea Fruit so we wouldn't order anything else next time. The waiter was nice but we thought he tried to get away from with some stuff for no reason. They have the square payment or an equivalent, they can still print your receipt. There were two items we didn't order and we were having such a good time it almost went unnoticed. But I thought they must have a very high alcohol tax because there was $30 difference. In the end, the waiter cleared up his mistake and we went about our business. This place is okay and bit expensive for the simplicity of the menu.

Good food, friendly service, and a pretty nice atmosphere. I can't remember exactly the name of my burger but it was delicious! I know it is supposed to be their most popular one. The flavors were bold, the beef was cooked to perfection and the portion was just right.

It was 4th of July, an hour before the Beach Street USA's fireworks were scheduled to wow us on the boardwalk - and my friends and I were HUNGRY. We were desperate for a quick fix. Most of the bars and pizza places were packed with tourists. Home Republic was in plain view, but surprisingly hidden to most who were crowding onto 31st street. It was the perfect spot with a home-hipster feeling - I give this place five stars, which is really rare for me to give... I've lived in Virginia Beach most of my life and have seen the evolution of the Oceanfront with towering retails and hotels. Home Republic is one of the few places I would call a true "local spot". It promotes Trivia Night Tuesday's and have great local beer selections. The home brewed beers on flights of four were all good. They also offer wine flights, which can delight someone who hangs out with beer enthusiasts. The appetizers, The Triple Dip Chips was my favorite. It had Gouda Cream, which go well with their local beer that is brewed on location. The corn bread with jalapeno was an exciting surprise that is served with a side of bacon jam. It's rare for a place to make me feel good as a customer. The place, food and beer were on point that night. The staff were nice and conscious that many were there to bolt out the door to see fireworks, they still had a smile on their face. Lastly, the owner's wife checked on us. She was kind and listened to us. She told us that her husband served in the Marine Corps for 20 years and it was his dream to open a restaurant that felt like home. They have achieved that dream and so much more. I am glad Home Republic has made a home near the Oceanfront. I will come again and promise to stick around longer. Ooh Rah.

Had dinner tonight - the galaxy Burger with fries. It was very tasty, and cooked the way I asked - something that, unfortunately, doesn't happen enough. The fries were great. The jalapeño cornbread and maple bacon jam was stupid, ridiculously good. If you don't order it, you're missing out. The beer was cold, service was fast. The previous night, we'd had an awful dinner at another place, so a good burger and beer was welcome.

I HAVE NOT BEEN HERE! However, I was looking for a gift for someone in the VAB area. Barbara at Home Republic took especially good care of me. She suggested a gift pack including a Tshirt, a growler, and a certificate for a fill. Just what I was looking for. Barbara took care of putting this together and having it shipped.

Good burgers. Very good fries! Service did take while to get to us, and food took a while; it did not seem busy. However, I cannot judge an establishment based on one visit. I will try again. But man.... Those burgers are great!!!

I ordered the Republic Burger with fries. The bacon jam on the burger was amazing! It comes with a fried egg on top,but I think that took away from the burger. I also had the "Cup of Joe" brown ale, very good but could have used a bit more coffee in my opinion. My second beer was the Crickey Summer Saison, that was very good too!! Over all, the meal was very good and the beers were excellent. I would go back anytime in in town.

Came here on a whim... it wasn't even in yelp when I initially came here so I took a risk by going and eating. The happy hour prices were pretty cheap, so I thought "Why not??!" The place is a very clean and cute restaurant/bar/pub/ soon to be brewery. Even if it was greasy bar food I would be happy, I was just hungry. Before even taking my seat, I noticed that the people who worked there are so nice as are the people that were in there. As I took my seat, I realized I had to choose from 8 beers that I never heard of, they were so nice in letting me try them before making a decision. I decided in the Young veteran's semper FiPA and beach brewing hoptopus. Both were extremely good (although I liked the beach brewing a bit more, perhaps it was the higher alcohol content, although it's still out for debate). Food: I had my first burger the week before in Maryland so I was extremely hesitant on getting another burger. Someone I came with got the burger on the happy hour menu and I was asked (forced) to try it. It was a burger with guacamole and bacon and when I tell you the angels sang when I took a bite... it actually happened. I liked it so much that I ordered on for myself right before the happy hour menu was closed for the night. Along with that I had a BBQ chicken that just hit the spot. The potatoes were excellent... literally everything was completely spot on. Restrooms: The fact that all the food was perfect made me believe there had to be a flaw somewhere. As I got up to go to the bathroom, I thought " Alas, there is no way their bathrooms are perfect". But lo and behold, when I walked in I noticed it was completely spotless. Not a pice of dirt on the floor not a thing out of place. If you live in the area or are just passing though, I highly suggest you stop here. It's quick and easy but also great food!

I really wanted to like this place, but I ended up feeling a little indifferent. The hubs and I had taken a bike ride from First Landing down to the Oceanfront on a recent Sunday evening and thought we'd try this place to re-fuel before we headed back. We each ordered one of Home Republic's own brews and a burger with fries... The beer was good. In fact, had we not been on our bikes I would have definitely grabbed a growler of the Rye Ale to-go. The food is where they lost us a bit. Both of our burgers came out rather dry (despite being ordered "medium") and rather unspectacular. Not bad, just not rave-about-them-come-back-again-immediately good. That being said, I'd definitely considering hitting up happy hour for a solid beer, or trying out trivia on a Tuesday night.

After our first experience with this place, my wife and I walked away feeling a bit conflicted. First off, I love the concept. Being a fan of local craft beer, this restaurant is exactly what is needed to keep the industry momentum going. Afterall, if people don't have a venue to enjoy craft beer then there won't be much of a viable market for it since so many small breweries cannot yet afford to bottle or can their beer. They can only distribute it by the keg. Hence the need for restaurants and bars. But I just can't get past the food, which left us both with feelings of "Meh". Our starter of cornbread with butter and bacon jam was really good and had me excited about my Republic burger (more bacon jam along with a runny over easy egg on top...my fave). My burger came out between medium rare and medium but the flavor just wasn't what I was expecting. I wanted big beefiness to light up every taste bud but what I got was something edible but leaned to the bland side of things. My real complaint is the lack of french fries on the menu. That is just un-American by any standard. Serving burgers without fries is like having cheese-less pizza or Thanksgiving turkey without the gravy. These things go together like Mom and apple pie, dammit! I really don't want a pile of mashed potatoes next to my burger even if you dump a handful of bacon on top. It's just not the same. I'm sure there is some building code reason or lease agreement that prohibits deep fat fryers on the premises but dude, did you really think it through before you signed your lease? A beer-centric bar menu with no fried foods whatsoever? I am all for innovation but...huh? My wife's burger was also problematic. She tends to order hers a bit more towards well done (she grew up in the UK and still has flashbacks about mad cow disease) so of course she ended up with a seriously charred to the point of being burnt burger. It is possible to cook a burger well done without burning it. She was actually worried about the level of carcinogens on the burnt meat until I told her she was conteracting them with the Polyphenols in her pint of Pineapple Grenade from Young Veterans Brewing Co. I love those little cancer fighting antioxidants! Her worries were abated. She was hungry so she ate the burger and her plop of mashed potatoes. On a positive note, it was steal the pint night with a tap takeover from Lickinghole Creek Brewery in Goochland, Virginia. I enjoyed my two pints of Magic Beaver IPA.

Came here last night and had a couple beers and got an appetizer. Ryan was the bartender and was really friendly and attentive so he wins on that one. The kitchen however, we ordered the chips trio and got dark brown guacamole and even darker brown chips that tasted over-fried yet somehow were cooler than room temperature. It's a decent spot on there right by the beach but the kitchen staff didn't even look like they knew what they were doing.

This spot is not full of gimmick beachside fare. The bacon jam is unbelievable, and the microbrew aspect is well appointed with some great choices. As a tourist, it was approachable and had a great vibe.

We were in Virginia Beach on our way to the Outer Banks for a wedding. We searched Yelp for a dinner location but didn't find anything that fit the bill. So we decided to go for a walk. We stumbled into Home Republic and were welcomed in by Ed who told us they just opened 6 days ago. We talked about the menu, the happy hour and their really cool 'bowling ball-like floors". We made our way back to our hotel to collect our daughter. We came back to this place and were so happy we did. The menu is filled with craft beers and a few wines. The food menu is simple with BBQ chicken, burgers, skewers, and a few other salads and entrees. Daily specials are offered as well. The happy hour special beers were wonderful and Joe, the owner came over to describe and explain all the beers. We each had a different draft and ordered a few more. We also ordered the BBQ Chicken which was absolutely delicious, enough to order a second order. The burger had guac, bacon and cheese and my two dinner guests ordered two of those. Just delicious. The potatoes that accompanied the dishes were just perfect. Barbara, owner number two was personable with us and we watched her make her way around the restaurant greeting other guests. The crowd was of all ages, some bar only, some dining room. The bartenders are all wholesome beautiful young woman as are the wait staff. Grace our server was attentive and bright. They take your order and you pay your bill with an iPad. Very cool. I wish Barbara and Joe all the best for great success. PS they will be brewing their own beer soon and I am sure it will be terrific.

I visited Home Republic with a group of four friends. We'd been at a brewery earlier in the day and just really appreciate places like Home Republic that are making their own craft beer. My husband loved their IPA and galaxy pale ale. I had their ginger berry - which is ginger beer and spiked cranberries. I also had the quinoa spinach cakes and the manager was interested in my opinion. I really liked them! I also liked that they sought my feedback. I'd happily order it again. Another couple of things that caught my eye: they do flights of beer (large craft beer selection) and WINE. Outside of wineries, I haven't seen this, but they have racks that are designed to hold four small wine glasses. Also, the jalapeno cornbread was moist and flavorful, and they have a great bacon jam. We enjoyed an appetizer that had a sample of meat skewers alongside the cornbread and bacon jam, so it was great for our group's sharing. Live irish guitarist played while we were there too. Overall, I recommend and will go again.

The food was outstanding. My family got the jalapeño cornbread. My 5 year old niece loves the bacon jam so much that she ate the remaining items right out of the cup. The fried goat cheese salad with crab cake was out of this world- one of the best salads I have had. My dad got the burger with bacon jam and he said it was the best burger he has ever had. We can't wait to return!

Nope. Went here because of it's 4 star rating...was less than impressed. There was no one else here which should have told us something, but we went in anyway. I gave 2 stars because the beer selection is good. The food SUCKED. The hamburger meat was flavorless. We asked for shrimp with no siracha, so we were given plain shrimp with nothing on it. The fries were ok and so was the BBQ chicken. Nothing was great. I'd skip this place.

As soon as we got there, we were told that it would take 30-40 minutes to get our food. Since there weren't other restaurants we wanted to go eat and we walked there, we decided to stay. service: everyone was really nice and friendly. We got our water and waited a long time before we could place our order for dinner. When we finally got our waitress' attention and asked to order dinner. She said she wanted to check with the manager first...We eventually ordered and received our dinner, but I wonder if they were going to turn us away after sitting there for 20-30 minutes. There were 3 people working in the bar and the tables. And I saw 2 people working in the small open kitchen. When we were there, the outside seating were almost full. The inside had one table of customer. It seemed like we were the last table of customers who sat down at a table. (They accepted a few customers to sit at the bar). They seemed under staffed even the restaurant was not close to being full. food: We were hungry so the waitress suggested that we got a couple loaf of the corn bread. That was the only thing that can come sooner. We also got the chips with salsa/guac/cheese. For our meals, we got The Republic, The Extra Smokey and the baby back ribs. The corn bread was smaller than expected. Each loaf was about the size of a muffin. It came with butter and bacon jam. It was moist and the jalapeno one had a nice kick to it. The chips came with smokey guacamole, spicy salsa and Gouda cheese sauce. The Gouda cheese sauce was really good. The spicy salsa was also tasty. I did not care for the smoky guacamole. The burgers were very good and super juicy. The baby back ribs were meaty and soft. But the broccoli was charred but almost raw. And the mac n' cheese tasted oily (too much butter?) and needed more flavor. I think the Gouda cheese sauce (from the chips) would add a good flavor to the mac n' cheese. pricing: I thought their burgers were reasonably priced considered its location and the portion. Their lunch menu online showed the corn bread was $3 each. We were charged $4 (dinner price?) each. The baby back ribs was priced at $17. It came with 4 ribs and 2 sides. I thought the corn bread was very pricy for such a small loaf. The baby back ribs were also slightly overpriced in my opinion. We liked the food we got and the service was really friendly. But we thought the food was somewhat overpriced. I am not sure if we will go there again if we are in the area.

WORST restaurant ever!! We went here based on the reviews but boy was that a mistake. Everything was horrible from food to service. I would get in to details on all the issues that brings me to write this review but honestly this restaurant is not worth a second more of my time. I will just say this, we left mid meal. As you can see I never write reviews but I was so aggrevated that I had to go somewhere else to eat dinner and the beer sucked too.
